Tuariki is a hapu of Te Tawera. This ancestor was born at Maketu between Parawai and Pukemaire. When he came out of his mother’s womb his father said, "My son standing like an Ariki". Hence his name Tuariki. Ihenga was his father and Hinetekakara was his mother.
Tuariki and children of Tanepawhero married into the Mataatua people and the Te Arawa people. It was his son Tuwahiawa and his descendants that married into the Ngati Umutahi hapu. Through this union emerged the hapu known as Te Tawera ki Tuariki which became known as a hapu of Te Tawera.
On 20th October 1991 it was decided under the guidance of the late kaumatua Kakaho Te Ua and Arapeta Te Rire that the name of Tuariki be retained for the Marae In 1993 the marae of Tuariki and its people were registered under the name of Ngati Tuariki, despite this Tuariki is still a hapu of Tawera through their connections to Iramoko, Hahuru and Umutahi marae.
